Queensland doesn’t have a state battery rebate any more. What you can claim is the federal one, and it’s substantial: around $250 off per usable kilowatt-hour of battery, roughly $2,500 on a typical 10 kWh unit.
It comes straight off your installer’s quote. No application, no waiting on a cheque. Here’s how it works, who qualifies, and how to size the battery before anyone quotes you.
How much is the battery rebate right now?
As at August 2026, the federal discount under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program is worth around $250 per usable kilowatt-hour, on the first 14 kWh of battery. On a typical 10 kWh home battery that’s roughly $2,500 off the installed price. The exact figure moves with the certificate market, so your installer confirms it on the quote.
Bigger batteries still get help, at a reduced rate. Capacity between 14 and 28 kWh earns 60% of the full rate. Between 28 and 50 kWh it drops to 15%. Above 50 kWh, nothing.
For most homes none of that matters. A typical Bundaberg house needs well under 14 kWh, so the full rate applies to the whole battery.
Is there a separate Queensland rebate?
No. Queensland’s Battery Booster program closed in May 2024 and nothing has replaced it. The federal program is the one Queensland homes claim in 2026. You don’t apply for it. Your installer handles the certificates and takes the discount off the invoice before you pay.
If a website is promising you a QLD government battery rebate, check the date on the page. Plenty are still advertising a program that’s been shut for two years.
Who qualifies?
You qualify if your home has rooftop solar, new or existing, and the battery is on the approved product list, capable of joining a virtual power plant, and installed by an accredited installer. One discounted battery per property. That covers most quality home batteries sold today.
A few things people miss:
You don’t need to join a virtual power plant. The battery just has to be capable of it.
You can add a battery to solar you’ve had for years. New panels aren’t required.
The installer’s accreditation is what makes the discount claimable. Ask to see it.
Why the discount drops again in January
The rebate now steps down every six months, in January and July. The current rate holds until 31 December 2026, then falls again. That’s not sales pressure, it’s the published schedule. The program shrinks as battery prices fall, until it ends in 2030.
We won’t tell you to panic-buy a battery. A battery sized wrong is a worse deal than a smaller rebate. But if you’re getting quotes anyway, the timing is worth knowing.
What size battery do you actually need?
Size the battery to your overnight usage, not to the biggest unit in the brochure. Your power bill already holds the answer: total kilowatt-hours divided by billing days gives your daily usage, and for most homes about two thirds of it happens after the sun goes down.

Storing power loses a little of it, so the panels are sized up to compensate.
A Bundaberg roof makes about 20% less power in mid-winter than the yearly average. The calculator checks winter and tells you straight if the system falls short.

Battery rebate questions we get asked
Do I need to already have solar?
No. The rebate applies whether the battery goes in with a new solar system or joins one you already own. If you’re not sure your setup qualifies, call us and we’ll tell you.
Do I have to sign up to a virtual power plant?
No. The battery has to be capable of joining one, and almost every current model is. Whether you ever connect it is your choice. We’ll explain the trade-offs when we quote.
How do I claim the rebate?
You don’t. An accredited installer claims the certificates and takes the discount off your invoice at the point of sale. If a quote shows the full price with no discount line, ask why.
Is the rebate worth it on a small battery?
Usually, yes. The full rate applies up to 14 kWh, which covers the size most homes need. The better question is what size suits your overnight usage. The calculator answers that in about a minute.
