Common questions

Smoke alarm questions, straight answers

The things people ask us about the Queensland rules.

What do the 2027 QLD smoke alarm rules require?

From 1 January 2027, every Queensland dwelling must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in each bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every level, either hardwired or powered by a 10-year sealed battery.

Hardwired or wireless-interconnected, which should I get?

Both can comply in an existing home. Hardwired suits places that already have wired alarms or are being renovated, while 10-year battery alarms with wireless interconnection avoid opening ceilings. We'll recommend whichever genuinely suits your place.

What happens if I don't comply?

Fines can apply. Non-compliance can also complicate insurance claims and property sales. More importantly, interconnected photoelectric alarms are the ones that wake you in time.

How much does it cost?

That depends on how many alarms your home needs, and whether they're hardwired or battery. We look first. Then you get one fixed price, and that's the one you pay.

Do rentals have different rules?

Rentals and homes being sold have needed compliant alarms since 2022. The 2027 deadline extends the same standard to every home in Queensland.

How long does the install take?

Most homes are done in a few hours. Battery alarms with wireless interconnection are quicker again, because there's no cabling through ceilings.
